3 out of 5 Square & Compasses (S&C)
I am a huge comic book/sci fi fan. I loved Iron Man 1 & 2. I even really liked the last Hulk movie. Thor and Captain America were awesome. But this movie just fizzled. I think it was the anticipation and the hype surrounding it. I went into expecting to have my mind blown...and while entertaining and I expect to buy it when it comes out on BR...my mind just was not blown like the other movies.
The main problem for me was its tempo. It was more like watching Star Trek than Star Wars. The Black Widow and Hawkeye subplots just slowed the story telling down. Also, who were these aliens that were invading? The threat just wasn't explained and this made it more academic rather than pulse pounding until the climax...so you didn't get that build-up to the end.
But I did like Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. The Capn', Iron Man and Thor fight was cool. The final battle was awesome with loads of special effects eye candy.

Where The Avengers set itself a high bar to meet...this movie had the bar set as low as it could. I mean you're going to make a movie about a kid's game that has no plot whatsoever and introduce an alien invasion? So I went into the theater not expecting anything but explosions and a popcorn-action-flick.
And I wasn't disappointed. There were somethings that made it hard to press the "I believe button". I know it's crazy for a sci-fi fan, but some of the nit-picky military things kinda was a distraction for me. I mean going from no prospects civilian to O-2 in 4-6 years? Not happening. And the soldier with prostetic legs...seemed more like a Sergeant First class than a Lt. Colonel.
But over all, it delivered on the action and I was thoroughly entertained.

This movie blew me away. I thought the visuals were absolutely stunning, beautiful and in HD...crisp. It deserves an Oscar for cinematography alone.
The story was pretty good too. While the Aliens Universe is the one the story unfolds in...it's not about the Aliens. Instead it's about Engineers...the creature on the turbolaser looking thingy in the first one. I thought it was fast paced...it didn't seem like 2+ hours whereas The Avengers felt longer than it was.
The only thing is the storyline is more intellectual than it is action, so some of the Army NCOs in the row in front of us were pissed.
* The theater had a Dark Knight Rises stand-up with Batman, Bane and Catwoman. I've been nervous because I haven't seen any pics of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman...just as Selena Kyle. So I was worried that maybe they knew they screwed the costume pooch with her. But it pays homage to the classic 1960s Catwoman and I think looks great.
* Saw a trailer for The Watch. Not a huge Ben Stiller fan...but big on Vince Vaughn and can stand the fat kid from Superbad.
